USB/DVD (1Gb) ISO release for testing
Warren has uploaded 32b and 64b 1Gb isos designed for USB thumb drive installations - or as DVDs - to the MEPIS Testing server (you need to be a subscribed user to access).
Here's his email to me:
To those who have subscriber access, and who can assist with testing, can you please download and give it a spin. Just use this thread for feedback. If you have any issues, we'll need to know which arch (32 or 64), your machine specs, and a brief description of the bug.
If you can participate it would be appreciated.

OK - I'll go first.
Downloaded 32b. Posting from it now (live DVD). Initially tried to write direct to USB drive (using the new msystem) - but the tool just stiks on formatting drive and doesn't get any further. I'll let Warren know about that.
So far everything else works really well - including MP3 on Amarok and avi files on kmplayer.
Notable additions:
Digikam + kipi plugins
Gimp
KPPP
KRDC
Filezilla (yay!!)
Ktorrent
Amarok
Kmymoney
OOo full (including calc and base)
kinfocenter
lucky backup
So far (as I initially said) - apart from the USB creation - everything works amazingly well. This is a great full featured potential release.
Would be really interested in onther feedback
Warren intends to release Monday I think.

 usb key
Brooko, I made a usb key from the install of 8.5.03 (from DVD) and booted to it/ran fine. at first I thought it wasn't working, but after a long while-20 minutes it made it. so I restarted & booted to usb key and it worked. this usb key is slow so I can't say if this process was unusual or not. I had the DVD in the drive & made the key from that. the install seems to be running flawlessly. hope this helps
Alan

Sorry, this is the first time I saw this--will test today. Is the 8.5.03 in Testing the one to use?
EDIT: well, msystem just hangs on formatting--using the downloaded big ISO and a new 2 GB stick. Gave up after 20+ mins.

When 8.5 came out, I had several similar failures with the mystem tool. I tried deleted and recreating the fat32 partition to no avail, but eventually it somehow worked on the fourth try. Unetbootin worked the first time, though.

Slightly off-topic, but does the antix2usb gui work? If it does, it is also supposed to work in MEPIS as well.

You mean: download the file in antiX and try to create the USB there? I will try that as soon as my antiX computer comes back home...

Is there source code for the antix2usb GUI under a free license? Maybe we could add it to the community repo.

Stevo, the antix2usb-gui was licensed under gpl as it is based on a sidux script. lagopus at antiX was the writer and I'll get it touch with him to get the source.
For it to work, you need python-gtk2 (I think MEPIS has this) gtkdialog and zenity.
If you have antiX, copy over these files from antiX /usr/local/bin to MEPIS /usr/local/bin antix2usb.sh and antix2usb-gui.py

To complete my report: a couple of hours later I tried again, this time just choosing to Create bootable M 8.5... This time, it worked.
Don't understand why the user has to unplug and plug back in again after the formatting--unetbootin does not require that.
But when I plugged it into my Dell 700m (with BIOS altered to look to the USB first), I got this:
