Re: Anybody thinking about an apt-notify plasmoid?
A convenient update earlier so here's a snapshot of the misaligned balloon. It happened very quickly but I could have sworn it was aligned properly for a moment and then as the tray fully loaded the icons it went a few paces to the right as in the snapshot. Not really a big problem but I hope it doesn't indicate one elsewhere in the desktop code.

What's the icon that it points to?

I guess the balloon just doesn't move after it's painted.

That's a weather widget from the KDE collection, before I added that the balloon lined up with the scissors icon, next on the right. I'd normally be using a weather widget in conky or gkrellm.

If I can trust my eyesight then that's what I think I saw, the background moved and the balloon stayed where it was.

Re: Anybody thinking about an apt-notify plasmoid?
Do you normally have the apt-notifier icon in the system tray (visible all the time) or do you use it's "Hide until updates available" feature which only displays the apt-notifier icon when updates have shown up? In my case I have the apt-notifier icon visible all the time so the icons in the system tray are pretty much in a static state when the notification balloon appears. I can see the possibility of the balloon being misaligned if the apt-notifier icon is being added to the system tray around about the same time that the balloon is shown.

That's probably it, didn't we add a wait time to make sure that's not the case... don't remember...

I remember some type of wait time being added but I think that was because the popup was appearing in the upper left corner of the screen.

I see that Squeeze also has update-notifier-kde, which has minimal extra dependencies. All it does, however, is pop up a notification that updates are available. It lacks all the extra functionality that the apt-notifier has.

Re: Anybody thinking about an apt-notify plasmoid?
Sorry if it appears that I disappeared. :) Thanks for replies various and observations, I had to take a break from Mepis 'ing for a while to deal with health issues. Anyway, I removed the weather applet and reverted the tray to the 'as installed' state. The displacement is still there 'one step to the right' as it were. As the tray loads the background moves relative to the bubble if updates are already available. I've tried both hiding the icon and not, and the result is the same. The whole phenomenon is not a deal breaker of course but it would look better to my eyes if the alignment precision was there. I'll admit a little nostalgia for the way the icon works in M8.0.
