new inxi features of possible interest
I've just finished a large chunk of inxi improvements. Latest version now: 1.4.86 New options: -n shows an additional line of information for user network cards, the interface id, like: eth0, status up/down, speed, mac address, duplex mode. This can help in especially non X situations to verify what actual connection is present, if any. This is a new feature so it probably won't work for all scenarios, especially usb wifi I suspect, but we'll get that debugged as we get more user feedback, that's why this release is 1.4.86, not 1.5.0 Also, -Gx now shows the graphics card pci busID, also useful for debugging misconfigured xorg.conf files or whatever. A new option allows users to pick from one of about 30 color schemes, this is started by running inxi in terminal, with -c 94 to 99 options, like so: inxi -c 98 This runs what is basically a color picker for the schemes, then writes them to user config files. | | | | Code: -c Available color schemes. Scheme number is required. Color selectors run a color selector option prior to inxi starting which lets you set the config file value for the selection. Supported color schemes: 0-30 Example: inxi -c 11 Supported color selectors: 94 (console, no X); 95 (terminal, X); 96 (irc, X); 97 (irc, X, in terminal); 98 (irc, no X); 99 (global). -n Show Advanced Network card information. Same as -Nnx. Shows interface, speed, mac id, state, etc. | | | | |
I also fixed the inxi updater, inxi -U, now it's more robust and less prone to failures, and has better exit error messages to let the user know what to do to fix the problem depending on the cause. I think that's the main changes, a lot of smaller cleanup items, but these are the ones you might find of interest in terms of user support.

Re: new inxi features of possible interest
Correct, older kernels I am seeing have very little information available, and the 'unknown' value is in fact the value the system gives to inxi, I get that on my Lenny kernels, for example.
I believe a newer kernel will show you more, they seem to be filling in that section of /sys on more recent kernels.
Can't say for sure, haven't seen enough data yet, that's what I noticed on the first tests and results though.Network: Card Altima (nee Broadcom) AC9100 Gigabit Ethernet driver tg3 v: 3.115 busID: 01:09.0 IF: eth0 state: up speed: 100 Mbps duplex: full mac: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
for example is running with the 2.6.37 kernel.

Re: new inxi features of possible interest
For those of us playing at home / http://www.inxi.org/Still learning about it: Although I am pretty sure I installed inxi via smxi, I am showing 1.4.23-1 as the latest available via Synaptic - is it a matter of waiting for the deb to be updated there, and/or where is the latest version available? What is the command to show the most information? ( Mine below is a result of inxi -F ) Thanks for a great tool.

I'm showing the current version of inxi to be 1.4.86 You should be able update to the latest inxi version using it's -U option:

Re: new inxi features of possible interest
You could also update with inxi -U ie no need to be root. BTW no need to run inxi as root either.

Re: new inxi features of possible interest
I think it depends on how inxi was originally installed whether you update it as root or as a regular user. If it was originally installed using Synaptic I think you would need to update it as root.

The rtl8187 is what is driving my Wireless USB. I Hope/Guess that is the feedback you needed for USB.

Re: new inxi features of possible interest
[In case no one mentioned it yet,] We have a 'Wiki' entry for inxi, here: http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php?title=InxiFeel free to update any info there, based on new features, or whatever. [I haven't YET played with the latest version of 'inxi', but plan to very soon.] EDIT: I've LONG been an advocate of getting Warren to pre-install this script, but that's never happened. Maybe someone could 'do the right thing' in regards to putting it into that 'Welcome' (community) thingy? (or whatever it's called.) It really needs some 'words' along with it, to go beyond just pre-installing it, so that users LEARN/understand its purpose, and about putting its output into forum posts when reporting crashes or asking hardware-related questions.

Re: new inxi features of possible interest
As it mentions in our wiki entry, it works best if EXECUTED as normal user. [Some output doesn't get shown, relating to drivers, IIRC, when you run it as root.]
