How come you are running

when I am running

Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Version 1.0.23?

Just wondering.

I've wondered about this too. All the different Alsa components have me confused. AntiX 8.5 comes with a default install of alsa-base 1.0.21+dfsg-2. My current AlsaMixer version is 1.0.23. When I run alsactl init as root, I get this:

Unknown hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Intel G45 DEVIBX" "HDA:10ec0269,10280456,00100100 HDA:80862804,80860101,00100000" "0x1028" "0x0456"
Hardware is initialized using a guess method

I've mucked around with updating so many Alsa-related components, I think I should do a clean install of antiX 11 and see what that does with my sound card.

[Apologies for hijacking the original post!]

You could try installing gstreamer-alsa. I had a similar problem with antix, then I installed gstreamer-alsa and things started to work.

I dunno, maybe that'll work for you. :-)

Thanks for the tip. I gave it a try, but no change in performance...

@Malanrich - Good to know that I'm not the only one with this problem.

@rokytnji - Here's my inxi -F

@humanespressomachine - Installing gstreamer-alsa didn't work.

Running alsactl init as root, I get:

Code:
Unknown hardware: "HDA-Intel" "IDT 92HD73C1X5" "HDA:111d7675,10280272,00100103" "0x1028" "0x0272"
Hardware is initialized using a guess method

Doing a quick google search of "IDT 92HD73C1X5 headphone", I've found that I'm not the only one with this problem.

See search results here: http://www.google.com/search?q=92HD73C1 ... e42eeb41c7

Now I need to take some time to read the results... be back in a while and wish me luck. :crossfingers:

Reading your bug report link bk_7312. I gathered that using a newer alsa fixed your problem.

The problem no longer occurs with an update to narwhal alpha 1 (20110401).
All audio on the device appears to be functioning correctly - including the HDMI audio out - which never worked, even with meerkat/lucid.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm assuming you mean "Natty Beta 1", not alpha.

I don't know how comfortable you guys are installing from source packages. All I can do is supply the tarball source package for alsa 1.0.24 . Maybe you can pm one of the package maintainers here to make a binary deb package out of it and you can install it with dpkg -i command.

ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/a ... 24.tar.bz2

Thanks for posting the tarball, roky. I've grabbed it and will give it a run (though I tend to do more damage than repair when installing from source!). I will also link to this from a packaging post to see if we can get a binary deb for whoever ends up needing it. It's interesting that both bk_7312 and I got the same kind of result from alsactl init.

Now a confession: I don't use headphone sound all that often. It just nags at me that there must be an answer out there.

Tried to install alsa 1.0.24 from source but can't ./configure it properly, says something about an error and not being able to create executables.

Code:
bk@antiX11:~/Desktop/alsa-driver-1.0.24$ ./configure
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

Then, I tried to read config.log but couldn't understand much of what it was saying. Guess I'll have to wait for someone to package the .deb file then.

@Malanrich - I mostly use headphones when listening since it gives me a better sound quality (from my experience) compared to the speaker so a working headphone is quite high on my 'must work' list.

bk: Ditto for me with the compiling error. I think it has to do with not having all the necessary compiling libraries installed on our systems. Before I start downloading that kind of stuff, I'll wait to see what progress can be made from our request in the packaging forum. At least people over there are aware of the need...

The speakers are also important to me (for plugging in external speakers).

my idea to you is to install the latest liquorix kernel, currently 2.6.38.5 and see if the headphones work. you could use smxi to get the things done more quickly.

The SimplyMEPIS kernel for antiX 11 is 2.6.36-4. Liquorix might be a good shot. (But my Dell is now in the shop for 2-3 weeks for hardware repair by technicians who at first refused to honor a warranty on a system running Linux...I'll try the kernel update when/if I get the unit back.)
