 Looking for GIMP help
I have no idea where to start on this one, and am hoping one of you has some clues. The attached photo is of the Upper Great Range in the Adirondacks, and shows Saddleback on the right and Basin on the left (where I was a couple of weeks ago, coming up from the back side). Saddleback is the last of the 46 4000' peaks that I have not climbed, and next weekend my kids are flying in and we are all going to climb it together. Great stuff.
My point: I want to have myself made a shirt with a "46" on the front and the range profile on the back. Is there a way in GIMP to have a line draped across those peaks that I can then isolate in order to take it to the shirt guy for screenprinting?
Thanks.

Try Filters -> Edge Detect -> Edge and play with the settings to get the best line.

 Re: Looking for GIMP help
If you want only a line, use inkscape. Save the image as .png and open in inkscape. Trace the mountain silhouette with the "draw freehand lines" tool. Use "object to path" (in the path menu) and "simplify" in the same menu to make it smooth. Repeat "simplify" until it's perfect. Adjust with the path tool (to the left) if the line has moved to much. Add more nodes if it doesn't behave the way you want. Change stroke style in the "fill and stroke menu" until it's the line width you want. Henry

Or maybe with one of the effects in GIMP or Showfoto, such as converting it to a charcoal drawing:

 Re: Looking for GIMP help
All the suggested methods are easy. What kind of quality do you want? Another alternative in inkscape is "trace bitmap/edge detection" in the path menu. You have to experiment a little with the threshold value and fix the line a little as some parts of the sky can be perceived as part of the mountain. Delete the lines you don't want and use "simplify" to fix smoothness. Henry
