MEPIS 11 CR (4.6.5 only): The plasma-widget-takeoff Thread
I had read a few blog posts about how the user would not use any KDE distro that didn't have this new menu, so pulled the latest svn source code, found a PPA that just packaged a prebuilt 32-bit library file, tore that down to the foundation to rebuild it correctly from the source code, and renamed it plasma-widget-takeoff to match other packages in the repo... so ta-dah! The first true debianized package, now in the experimental KDE 4.6.5 repo. Blog post: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2011/11/08/ta ... enu-style/So there's a new menu style to hate along with Kickoff, Lancelot, and the rest I found it best to wait a few minutes or log out and in before trying to add the widget to the taskbar, and the default icon (I got Tux) can be changed in its Settings. It appears in the "Application Launcher" section of widgets as "Takeoff". The Favorites section will start out empty and has to be manually populated.

The blog says it's configurable. If the tabs are removed and the icons are displayed in one column (with text to the right) on a grayish background, it will be quite handy. Takeoff classic. Henry

One downside: you have to add a shutdown reboot option yourself, I removed the show all and favorites tab and then I didn't see the shutdown reboot logoff option available. Minor thing, obviously, and easily solved.

Stevo, thank you so much for turning me on to Takeoff. IMHO, this is by far the best freakin' answer to an application launcher ever conceived. Stylish, modern, simple and functional- what more could you ask for? Great on the desktop, great on the netbook. This is easily my favorite app of the year (and who'd of thought an app launcher could be exciting?).

Re: MEPIS 11 CR (4.6.5 only): The plasma-widget-takeoff Thre
Just stumbled upon this article today: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2011/11/08/ta ... enu-style/Hadn't heard about Takeoff before, so I tried it. I'm still running KDE 4.5.3 in Mepis, so I tried Takeoff in openSUSE and PCLOS -- found it in both distros' repos. This is nice. I use Classic style for my main menu, and I also use a customized desktop right-click menu a lot, but I added Takeoff to my panel to use as an alternative. Maybe it's time for me to upgrade to a newer KDE version in Mepis.
