 Wiki registration open for 24h
We have had the Wiki new user registration turned off because of high spam pressure.
We opened it today for new user registration, and will close it again at the end of 24 hours. We are considering making this permanent: i.e., a short "registration period" once a month, or something like that. Thoughts?
Jerry

That should help. But I thought it was set so that only members here were allowed to register there. Is that not the case?

Re: Wiki registration open for 24h
It is not. There is no automatic way, I am told, to check new registrants against Forum members. Same with the Community website. I do that manually on a daily basis...

Thank you for that. I suppose it's just something that has to be lived with for now.

Re: Wiki registration open for 24h
Well... you might want to reconsider - first spammer has hit already: http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php? ... _postei_31I guess you should pick whatever method is most efficient for you (regarding dealing with spam, handling new registrations), as long as there is a reasonable convenient way for users to register. Easy registration encourages contribution to the wiki - if users can only register once a month that might discourage people to do a spontaneous contribution. Isn't it possible to add a Captcha to the registration page?

Re: Wiki registration open for 24h
Wiki registration is closed again. We had 3 spammers in that period, not too bad--don't know about the captcha, I believe the software is quite out of date at this point.
We will open registration again next month for a day, and anyone who just can't wait should PM me.

Re: Wiki registration open for 24h
Personally I have always thought that wiki registration should be automatic for registered forum users and by request or application for others. Jerry

Re: Wiki registration open for 24h
The wiki was once connected to the old MEPIS.org forum and had automatic registration. That was a very different software. Henry

Re: Wiki registration open for 24h
I think users should be qualified through the forums first and agree wholeheartedly with the once a month registration period if that will keep the low life away.
