What's the latest on 3G modems?
I have a note to myself to revise the short section on 3G, but have no idea what to write. I have currently this piece of drivel: 1) Is that correct? 2) What else should we be saying? TIA

Re: What's the latest on 3G modems?
Many 3G modems will be recognized by MEPIS 11's normal Network Management widget if modemmanager is installed first. That package was intentionally omitted when M11 was released because of a problem with some motherboards hanging on bootup for several minutes while it looked for 3G modems on regular serial ports. It was a kernel locking interaction with modemmanager which has been corrected in subsequent kernels.
So I would suggest adding the advice to install modemmanager, with advice that if that makes booting hang for several minutes (it will eventually boot), upgrading the kernel.

Will KPPP work?

Re: What's the latest on 3G modems?
I believe it does if configured properly (I don't have a 3G modem) - but Kppp doesn't automatically recognize the modems, you have to tell it where to look. modemmanager is the dbus connection that recognizes the modem when it is plugged in. If I'm not mistaken, then a udev rule could bring up Kppp, but I think in MEPIS the rule notifies the network management widget...
Anyone with working 3G want to weigh in to confirm or correct?

Re: What's the latest on 3G modems?
I found the wiki to be all that I needed to get up and running with my 3G modem (using KPPP). I had to 'find' the right name for my modem as the one that I was given by following the instructions there didn't work. Everything else was spot-on. I haven't tried ModemManager as you have to be on-line to acquire it. Which defeats the purpose as far as I'm concerned.
