I downloaded the tar.gz from libreoffice.org and installed it using dpkg, after completely removing the previous version with synaptic. It seems to work fine, including the thesaurus. I do see "OpenOffice.org New Thesaurus" as you mentioned, but for the life of me I can't find any installed thesaurus package in synaptic.
The reason you don't remember installing a thesaurus is because you didn't. Libre Office should have one pre-installed. If you go to Tools > Extension Manager, you should see an entry entitled:
"English (Australia, Canada, South Africa, UK, USA) spelling dictionaries, hyphenation, and thesaurus"
There's a lock symbol to the right, meaning this extension was installed by default and it cannot be removed.
Although the thesaurus should
be installed by default, it needs to be enabled by checking the box next to OpenOffice.org New Thesaurus under Tools > Options > Language Settings > Writing Aids.
