The iso was installed to a USB stick using Unetbootin in Lubuntu (after experiencing problems running Unetbootin in Ubuntu-Studio). I'm not sure what other information would be useful, like perhaps a log file. I'd appreciate whatever the brilliant minds from the Mepis Community may offer and for tonight will try the 32 bit version. FYI I've four hard drives as well as four Linux distros on my tower. The last time I tried Mepis it was the most stable KDE desktop I'd ever experienced. It was on a 32 bit machine.

I would install the latest version -- MEPIS 11 -- fresh.

Ditto. Mepis 11 is totally stable. Has additional functionality. Uses the same (but later model) KDE Desktop that Mepis 8.5.x does.

Re: New install of "SimplyMEPIS-USB_8.5.03-rel1_64" is unsta
I have to say that the M11 stock xorg, Kwin openGL effects, and some Intel chipsets such as the GM4500 have a few problems, such as having the desktop lock up when you change something in System Settings.
You can unlock the desktop by turning kwin effects off and on with <shift><alt><F12>, but upgrading to the Intel xorg driver in the community repo or squeeze-backports would be a better solution. Radeon drivers are also much improved.

+ 1 for Mepis 11, forget the ancient 8.5 series.
The Nvidia drivers in 8.5.xx had a known regression bug which I reported to Warren all the way through the development cycle and well into the post release. They didn't get fixed until about 1 month after the last update release of M8.5, and the only fix was the official proprietary nvidia driver, I think by memory, 169.12 was usable, and 173.14 was good. The OP's system uses the onboard nvidia 6100 GPU, which equates to the nvidia driver issue, a non-linux, third party addition.
You can switch to vesa and the system will be stable, but crappy resolution and very slow. If you still want to carry on with the aged 8.5 series, I kept a copy of the drivers if you can't get them elsewhere.

Thanks for the replies, OK I'll try 11. When looking at download mirrors 11 wasn't on the Indiana University mirror which has blazing fast download speed. Did try 32 bit 8.5 last night performance was worse. BTW both 32 and 64 bit performed well in live CD mode.

I think someone there is not syncing their mirror. However you can download the 10.9.88 TEST version and use it. I wouldn't recommend it as the update/upgrade that would be required would negate any time savings because of its size. Plus you wouldn't quite have Mepis 11 afterwards.

Here's my "adventure" with the install of SimplyMEPIS-1.5G_11.0.00_64. The live CD ran very well. When rebooting after the install was finished, first after logging in the system froze on the second of the four progress images (for lack of what else to call them) on the KDE splash screen. The second and further attempts brought up the default desktop image however no panel, K button and the like. In the upper left corner of the screen was a small terminal window white w/black letters that would respond to keystrokes only when the mouse curser was inside of the terminal window. Another observation, the file system partition contains 4.48gB of data, notably less than other distros that are installed and functioning on this tower. Although the other distros have additional post install software and codecs. Installed on this machine are: Kubuntu, Ubuntu-Studio, Lubuntu and Fedora as well as the non-functioning Mepis. Booting is normally handled with the grub (ver 1.98) associated with Kubuntu. After an install update-grub is run from Kubuntu, then I'll boot into the new system. The bios on this machine allows any HD to be selected as first boot device. With the most recent attempt at installing Mepis, I selected the drive to which Mepis was to be installed as the first boot HD, then proceeded with the install. Using the Mepis grub, when attempting to boot to Mepis produced error 15, likewise when attempting to boot Kubuntu. Ubuntu-Studio and Memtest booted properly while Fedora would only boot to terminal login and Lubuntu wasn't found. Returning the drive containing Kubuntu as first boot drive, booting to Kubuntu and running update-grub returned to the boot described above. I'd like to try one more time as suggested install using Vesa as the display driver, how do I go about doing that?

When running from the Live-media, there is a Mepis Manual icon on the desktop with answers to your questions, specifically Configuration > Display Only thing I'll add is, I am not sure if the Live-media state is transferred to the installed base, so I would try at the very least, pausing the grub boot and appending these to your boot line. They will only run on that session only. xdrvr=vesa nvidia.modeset=0 Also, you are testing the first release of Mepis 11, there have been 2 since then. The latest is 11.0.12 (December 2011) Furthermore, my recommendation based on your setup is to try one of the community remasters, in particular the Mepis-Roadblock2-64 from Danum available from this post viewtopic.php?f=59&t=32602. That should be xdrvr=vesa confx You can try with and without the nvidia.modeset=0 See here for more info: http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php?title=Cheatcodes
