Downgrade Xserver-Xorg or buy a new graphics card ?
Would like to know if xorg 11 is ever going to support my nvidea fx5200 card or if I need to downgrade to xorg 10 or just buy a new card. I managed to get xorg 10 working on my laptop using the Kent/Danum proceedure but this desktop install is running sid/experimental repos and kde 4.7.4 and I cannot manage as yet to downgrade to xorg 10 on it. I'm growing weary of pixelated images in videos due to running the noveauo driver. I was ready to buy a gt-9500 card but just saw a post questioning correct drivers for it so now I'm not sure. Anybody got an easy or not way to downgrade xorg or would it be better to buy a new card. If it is recommende to buy a new card what ones are recommended and what drivers are needed. Thanks, Jerry

The 1.11 Xorg release was the version that broke the 173xx legacy driver (which is why you needed to downgrade to 1.10). Xorg 1.12 is supposed to come out in early March. I've seen at least one post on the nvnews.net forum that leads me to believe that the 173xx driver might work again with the 1.12 release: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr ... ost2514005. I guess we will find out if they really do fix it or not. Even if it does get fixed with Xorg 1.12, I'm sure nvidia will eventually stop supporting the FX5200 for newer Xorg and kernel versions, so getting a more recent video card might make sense.

I only posted that thread because I have seen posts about certain nvidia cards having issues with the newer drivers (I believe joany was one person with this issue) and would like some advice first. According to nvidia my video card is supported all the way through to the current driver, but I just wanted to know if anyone has had experience running the 9500 with newer drivers than the stock 260.x included by Warren. All and all, the 9500 has been a wonderful card!

Re: Downgrade Xserver-Xorg or buy a new graphics card ?
well, that is hopefull news... I can wait till march and see how it turns out. I have 4 of these fx5200 cards and they worked fine for what I do and are easy to configure in older boxes. I seldom mess with games and when I do it's mah-jong or solitare so the graphics quality is not important there but splotchy video is rotton to watch. The real solution is a new system altogether but my piggy bank is not full enough for what I want yet. Jerry

Thanks benny_fletch, if I buy a card before a new system that is the one I'm looking at. Jerry

I just upgraded to the 295.20 nvidia driver using sgfxi. It's the first driver in 4 or 5 months that I haven't had to tweak the xorg.conf file to get a desktop.
