Re: Any ideas for default applications for MEPIS 11.5?
KDE SC 4.7.4 being uploaded to sid >>in case anybody is following that sort of thing. i thought I noticed it with my wheezy . kind of a moot point around here, “thanks guys” but it created a little excitement over on the apto... boards. i've been doing the upgrades for about three days now and it looks grr8 (tony the tiger) keeps getting faster and faster... thanks guys seems that the newer xorg... and drivers would be a great addition.

A different way to get there.

Re: Any ideas for default applications for MEPIS 11.5?
Not sure if it would be considered a default application or not, but support for SSD TRIM would be greatly appreciated. I just made the move to an SSD drive and its my understanding trim has to be set via command line. If someone could write a short script or program to enable trim I think that would be a great feature for Mepis.

I'm pretty sure that Trim has been in kernel releases for a while.

Yes I do believe that its in the kernal but as far as I know you have do some manual editing to make it function. I thought if someone could make a little Mepis user assistant with a GUI for enabling trim it would be nice. I also thought a GUI user assistant for setting the GRUB time out would be useful. I know these can all be done through CLI but some of us like GUIs.

Easy enough if you use Ext4 or btrfs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRIM

Re: Any ideas for default applications for MEPIS 11.5?
Yeah there is something about using the discard mount option, but without doing a lot of research online, the average user doesn't know how to do this. I did some reading on it before I purchased my drive, but I don't remember how to do it. I just know that it can be done through command line by adding a discard command somewhere. Thats why I thought it might be easy for someone with programing knowledge to write short script to do this automatically. Then the user can open the 'Mepis system assistant" select the TRIM tab and check a box to enable TRIM.

Re: Any ideas for default applications for MEPIS 11.5?
There have been several suggestions for updating an Assistant. I'd suggest an email to dev@mepis.org concerning it. They are getting to be more prevalent and it's a nice feature.

Don't bother. This sort of suggestion has come up many times before and, unless someone in the Community is willing and able to do the work, it will not happen. Warren lacks both time and incentive.

Re: Any ideas for default applications for MEPIS 11.5?
My needs are not as demanding as most. First thing I install via Aufs capabilities when running a Live Mepis DVD: is Google Chrome and the second is Pan if i have internet access.
Synaptic - A standard way of upgrading software for a new user, and us older newbies. Cheese - would be nice to test webcams from the live DVD Pan - For acess to the usenet on Live DVD
GIMP - I find this to be great for editing photos from the memory stick or hard drives and not needing to use a win?? operating system when visiting family of friends, or a business. ImageMagick - a tool to make Photo Indexes ( Iuse this a lot, and having it on a live DVD would be good... Ksnapshot - When exploring the web using a live DVD, and need to capture a bank statement, or on-line order Gwenview - to have a fast image viewer - I had a batch rename fuction, can not locate now in KDE 4.7 remaster from Danum, that I an enjoying on two computers, but I really like using it on the 10,000 RPM HD system.
VLC - So I can play AVI, & Xvid files. Kaffeine - as it always seems to choose the correct sound card when there is a conflict with HDMI from a video card.
Libre Office Suite - I do not know if we can install more printer software to be able to use a printer with a live DVD, I have tried with little success in the past (not recently).
If there is room, I would like Google Chrome on the live DVD, but I always download via Synaptic if i have internet access...
