Pulling this into it's own thread before I derail Danum's ISO announcement and quick feedback page.

Post Re: VLC - Roadblock B 64 (cont.)
Thinking about this I would have removed using the default repos using aptitude, then enabled the community and multimedia repos and tried to install using synaptic, if that did not work then switch to trying to install using aptitude.
But the problem has been addressed, in a different manor,

Post Re: VLC - Roadblock B 64 (cont.)
As of right now one of the temporary workarounds is to launch VLC with the command: cvlc

This can be done from the klaunchers: "run command"

Beyond that I'm not too terribly inclined to continue hacking away at this problem with both VLC 2.0 and Warren's Mepis 11.5 betas on the horizon.

I did a trial run first on my new E320 notebook, found the failings, then rebuilt it.
Load the system
install 3.1.01 kernel from Stevo, reboot.
Kernel available from Post # 286254 by Stevo.
http://www.mepiscommunity.org/forum/vie ... f&start=30
enable all CR , multimedia, Mepis, teharris and backports, the do a full upgrade, which takes care of the xserver, firefox, & vlc
Install Thunderbird, cheese, more multimedia stuff and a few utils.

No faults whatsoever, everything works as I would expect.

For Wheezy, with the tentative freeze date in June, the plan now is to try to ship the latest possible point release of the KDE 4.8 series.

Which would be KDE 4.8.4

Agreed that is interesting, but I will be surprised if WW gets 4.8.4 into M11.5 - more likely to be in M12?

BTW did you notice this rather ominous bit from the same source?
Quote:
I use KDE 4 on my laptop and I think it is a solid desktop environment and platform. However I am finding it less and less attractive for me. On one side, my usage of the computer has been slightly changing and on the other side, I do not like how the new developments in KDE are evolving, things like plasmoids or activities are not attractive for me. I have switched my other 2 systems to awesome although I continue to use mainly a bunch of KDE applications: dolphin, konsole, kate, juk, kmix, etc.

For those wondering who GuiGuy was quoting: http://raphaelhertzog.com/2012/02/10/pe ... -kde-team/

She's just one person on the Debian/KDE team. If she decides to focus her attention elsewhere somebody else will likely step up to take her place, so I would be very hesitant to cast her comment in a "ominous" manner.

Clarified my post to indicate I was referring to GuiGuy's quote.
