Hi,

Been having a bit of trouble with Firefox so thought I'd try Google Chrome. I couldn't find this in the repositories so went direct and chose the 'self installing' option.

Now when I try to open Chrome, what I get is Debian. Any suggestions, please?

Please explain. You get Debian what? Also what version of Mepis are you using? If M11, double click the deb file you downloaded, gdebi will pop up and allow installation.

I get www.debian.org. I think I must have downloaded the wrong option. However, I now don't know where to find what I originally downloaded.

I'm running M11. If I have to start again, how do I remove the 'wrong chrome?

It looks like you downloaded a link to a Debian site so nothing really got installed. Go to this page:
https://www.google.com/chrome/index.htm ... epagepromo

Click the download tab, and choose 32 bit or 64 bit Debian deb depending on what you are running. Then go to the folder you saved it to and double click the file to install. Gdebi will open and you can install with that app.

A line will be added to your sources.list so you will be notified of new releases when they are available.

I've downloaded from the page you posted. I have it in the download section of Tools but when I double click Chrome, as you stated, I get a panel that says ' this link needs an application to open it with: choose'. All I have to choose from is the documents I've written and the desktop which contains nothing but the Mepis icons and trash.

This is where I usually give up. Could you help further, please?

Go to the folder where Chrome is saved. You will find a package called google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb or similar, depending on which version you have picked. But the name must end with .deb to be the real thing.
Left-click on it, a single click is enough. You will be asked for your root password.
Next question is if you want to install.

I have a theory -- but maybe it's wrong -- that upgrading packages beyond a certain point will lead to trouble on any given Linux system/configuration. I found this to be true with Firefox and with video drivers. When that point is reached, you have to upgrade your system (kernel and/or DE and maybe hardware) to do any further upgrades to those packages.

But back to the point about installing Chrome: There's a big fat "Install Chrome" button on the Google home page (www.google.com) that takes you directly to the download site where you can select a Debian/Ubuntu package for Chrome.

I think you are right. Newer versions most likely require updated or new libraries that may not be available in older Linux distros.

All is now well. I did as instructed and it worked. What I didn't realise is that the downloads in Dolphin are different to those in the downloads section of Firefox. Stupid of me, I know.
