Mythtv on M11?

#1 Postby GuiGuy » Sat Apr 14, 2012 1:33 pm

I have tried several times to install mythtv on M11 (both 32bit and 64bit) but failed to get it working, although my tv card works OK on "Vista Media Center".
The trouble seems to be related to mysql.
I have used Synaptic up to now - is this my mistake?

Yes, I read it but since I have never used aptitude yet I went ahead with synaptic. Perhaps I was foolish to do that - I will now install aptitude and try again.

synaptic will work fine, too. in fact, synaptic should be even easier than using aptitude. you'll likely be even able to search for just mythtv and synaptic will recommend the other dependencies that are required. the mysql database setup should be all handled by the install.

aptitude was documented at the time because it sometimes is able to resolve dependency issues better than synaptic. mythtv works, and works just fine on m11 - i know, i have it running.

it does take a bit of configuration, but so long as your tv card is supported it's worth the effort.

"On what host does the MYSQL server reside:" says synaptic.
?????????????

EDIT: Before that it said "Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) at ........"
Perhaps I should uninstall mythtv and mysql and start again?
EDIT2:Completely uninstalled mysql and mythtv and then tried to install just mythtv but still get the same weird messages from synaptic!

Fresh install of M11.0.12 32-bit.

Using synaptic:-
Added multimedia repository.
Installed libdvdcss2, w32codecs, ttf-mscorefonts-installer and did "defoma-app" as recommended.
Applied all upgrades.
Everything seems to be working OK.
Tried to install mythtv but got "unresolved dependencies"

What should I try next?

Mythtv is a Debian-Multimedia package and it has other dependencies that also come from the Debian-Multimedia repo (mythtv-database, mythtv-frontend, mythtv-backend). Synaptic might not be able to pull in those dependencies because of the way M11's pinning is setup (the Debian-Multimedia repo probably has a lower priority). I think if you set 'stable' as the preferred distro in Synaptic's preferences that mythtv might install okay. If that doesn't work try aptitude.

Thanks, kmathern.
Setting stable as preferred allowed synaptic to try to install mythtv.
But now synaptic is telling me "Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)......." and then saying "On what host does the MySQL server reside: ".
I have no idea how to answer that.

it should be able to. synaptic is how i installed mythtv on my m11 box.

guiguy, are you being told what dependencies are missing?

from a command prompt run:

aptitude search myth | grep -i mythtv

and post the output so we can see what has been installed.

there is a possibility that your tvtuner card needs a driver. this will likely not be included in the above list. are you sure your card is supported by mythtv? just because it works with windows is no indication that it is supported by mythtv or linux for that matter....

don't forget, once you've enabled the debian multimedia repo you need to hit reload in synaptic before doing any installs
