A bit of info for anybody with similar problems:-

Vista's "Media Center" records to a nasty proprietary format (surprise?) called dvr-ms.
VLC tries to play the dvr-ms files but fails to give an acceptable rendering.
But Handbrake-gtk does a very good job of converting them to an "m4v" format that plays perfectly in VLC.
