 Numlock key
My Mepis 11 will not automatically energise the NUMLOCK key. I have set up the keyboard options to default to NUMLOCK ON, and also the BIOS setting is for NUMLOCK ON, but each time it boots up I find the numlock is not on. This is particularly irritating as I usually use the numeric keyboard for all numerical input. So, please what is wrong and how do I correct it?

 Re: Numlock key
Install 'numlockx' via Synaptic.
Then open a terminal and run
numlockx on

 Re: Numlock key
Did exactly as instructed, then rebooted the PC. Result:- No Numlock still! Executed numlockx on again, still no numlock.

 Re: Numlock key
Weird. Try it as root: One thing to keep in mind -- the NumLock light/indicator on your keyboard might be reversed. IOW, the light will be off but NumLock will be on, or vice versa.

IOW, the light will be off but NumLock will be on, or vice versa. ------------ I just tried numlockx and, at long last, it appears that I can use the numeric keypad upon startup in M11 without pressing the NumLock key first. But the NumLock light isn't on. I tried numlockx as User and then as root and I'm not sure which time it worked (given my confusion about not having the light on). At any rate I'm happy. Thank you! Uh, I think that was my most serious, intractable problem in M11. Pretty amazing, really.

 Re: Numlock key [Solved]
I tried numlockx as root, and the result is the same as for the previous contributor: The numeric keys work, but the numlock indicator is off, the operation of the lamp being now reversed!!
So th result is - working but strange and misleading. The same keyboard switched to my WinXP machine works perfectly normally. Looks like there's still a Mepis problem here, but thanks for your help in the meantime.

 Re: Numlock key
FWIW, I had the same experience- numlockx does turn numlock on, but with the LED reversed. That is the same behavior I had with Debian Lenny/KDE3.

 Re: Numlock key
That is not uncommon. I've not pursued it, but it might be worth a shot to try turning NumLock off in the BIOS, and see if that makes a difference. My understanding is that numlockx will turn them on, regardless of the BIOS setting.

 Re: Numlock key
tried seting the BIOS to Numlock OFF, and it made no difference - numbers work OK, light is off!
