Post How to unpack a 7z file
I can not locate a program, or do not know what script to use in a terminal to unpack a file. I downloaded unrar-free (1:0.0.1+cvs20071127-1) but that does not work, or i am unable to discover the right command line.

Ark will handle this format. You do not say what Mepis version you are using but from Dolphin opening the file will bring up the ark GUI, from which you can view and extract the contents.

I don't think Mepis (M11 anyway) supports 7z OOB (out of the box), but I think it should if you install the p7zip* (p7zip, p7zip-full, p7zip-rar) packages.

There's also the kde-servicemenu-extract-and-compress package that Stevo built for the M8.5 and M11 CRs.

The packages in the testrepo are slightly newer. I'm not sure why they are still in the testrepo. If there was a problem with them, or just not enough feedback.

The test version correctly names the .xz files it creates--it turns out that lzma is deprecated, so using KEC actually creates .xz files instead of lzma. I still can create true lzma files partly with KEC, using it to create a tar file, then "lzma <filename>.tar" on the command line---mainly to create compressed orig.tar.lzma files, since older versions of MEPIS have trouble with the xz files.

Steve (too lazy to create a true LZMA entry for KEC)
