 Re: Not getting correct resolution
Go here: http://smxi.org/and check the help available. You can specify a particular nvidia driver if needed. You can also use other switches to get a driver installed. They are listed in help. Also, have you tried the vesa suggestion yet? That should run on anything. No matter what. You will find the correct syntax on the cheatcodes page I linked to. You can use vesa with a specified resolution. VESA is the bottom line video driver that's supported by all manufacturers.

 Re: Not getting correct resolution
Yes vesa works but it gives me no better options than I already have! I want to have a 1920x1080 resolution and nothing anyone here has suggested has got me any higher than what I already have!

 Re: Not getting correct resolution
What, exactly, are you putting in when using the xres cheatcode?
Also, you might install nvidia-xconfig (and nvidia-setting if it is not installed yet). The nvidia-xconfig will show up in System Settings and should allow configuration of your resolution.

 Re: Not getting correct resolution
xres=1920x1080 confx is what I put in.
Nvidia-xconfig is already there it has only got one setting, auto and that goes straight to 800x600 there are no other options. Nvidia-settings is also there according to synaptic.
I downloaded puppy linux and tried that, it had the same problem, I was thinking of DLing Tinyme but I suspect it will be the same. I might even try Ubuntu.

 Re: Not getting correct resolution
Curious about your hardware, is monitor a crt or flat screen, is video on board or card? I have had problems in past with xorg & using 15 pin vga cable with flat screen monitors on cd install. But no sweat with hdmi cable all is normal. Also res seems a bit high without proper glx driver for your rig, might try 10243x786 to start. Might try the cheat this way too. confx xdrvr=1024x768
FYI 200 series nvidia cards & onboard chips sometimes need different drivers & can be a pita.

 Re: Not getting correct resolution
@Timbo75,
You mention having used smxi/sgfxi to install the nvidia driver and later talk about using some of the cheatcodes like xres=****, xdrvr=**** & confx.
The cheatcodes won't have any effect if you've used smxi/sgfxi to install the nvidia driver. Sgfxi removes the mepis-init package when it installs the nvidia driver.
The mepis-init package needs to be reinstalled to get the cheatcodes working again. That may or may not fix your resolution problem but at least the cheatcodes will be functioning again.

 Re: Not getting correct resolution
Hardware is as follows
Benq 24 inch widescreen LCD monitor, native resolution is 1920x1080 according to windows 7.
graphics card is nvidia GeForce GT 220 1gb connected to monitor through DVI cable. smxi/Sgfxi has installed the 302.07 (unstable or experimental from memory) driver and I now have 800x600 resolution with no other options to use. The most up to date driver from nvidia is190.42 sgfxi will install 190.40 without a problem however that still leaves me where I started. Tried installing the 190.42 driver after DLing from nvidia but it gets so far then tells me ERROR: Unable to determine the version of the kernel sources located in '/lib/modules/2.6.36-1-mepis-smp/source'.
@kmarthem
I tried the cheat codes before and after using smxi/sgfxi however did not know it wouldn't work after, will try what you suggested and see but i'm not real hopeful. It really has been too long since using linux!
Last time it was trying to get a canon ip1600 printer to work, fixed that problem after buying a different printer from a garage sale for $10 that work OOTB with mepis! Maybe I should try that with graphics card.
I also thought about disabling the onboard graphics in the BIOS, would that do anything?

 Re: Not getting correct resolution
With the nvidia driver have you tried using a very minimal xorg.conf? I'm using the xorg.conf shown below. In my case Xorg seems to autodetect and setup everything correctly while starting X and it works fine.
