Post Skype 4.0 for Linux
Finally, a new version of Skype for Linux and it comes in Debian 6.0 deb form which installs easily in MEPIS 11.
It's supposed to have better audio quality, less chat lag & better webcam support

See if this clears up the 78 speed audio.

The video chat is a definite plus.

Thanks for the link.

Ads - that's not a price I'm willing to pay, and neither am I willing to subscribe to Microsofts service, seeings as I go out of my way to rid my systems of the garbage they come with - i.e, remond software. I've been telling my friends and family that I prefer Googles offering because it just works better, plus it's installed on my tablet.

More people are warming to it because smartphones are coming out with it preloaded and all you need is a google account to get started.

hmm google talk sounding better, better $ value from an Ozzy point of view.
Version 4 Skype looks like version 2.2 to me, plus ads.
Crashed immediately for me. [v4]
But did work later with a satellite [NBN] connection in the mix, Skype to Skype. The video was way out of sync, but audio was ok.

Cheers NH

I prefer Google Talk for its simple functionality and the fact that its video is always very good.

Google also is pushing Google Voice, basically a Private Branch Exchange VOIP solution. For those wanting the same PC-to-Phone functionality of Skype, Google Voice is an excellent option.

With one HUGE caveat. Many of the Google Voice features are only available to residents of the US as of right now, and nobody knows when support will be extended to other countries.

As far as I am aware, you should still be able to place and receive calls even if you are not in the US, but you can probably forget features voicemail, free text messaging, call history, conference calling, call screening, blocking of unwanted calls, and voice transcription to text of voicemail.

I just tried this on my system, and all the futzing around I used to have to do for my audio has been fixed.

Have not actually made a call yet, but it is nice to have it finally working well.

Yes, the audio plays at the proper speed. I think the actual interface looks very much the Windows one.

I too have made a call yet. Tried last night but my son didn't answer.
